Over the next few weeks, we are taking a closer lo Over the next few weeks, we are taking a closer look at Cylburn’s five City Demonstration Gardens, each designed to showcase the possibilities of a typical Baltimore rowhome’s yard. These gardens are meant to display the varied and sometimes surprising potential for gardening in the city.

The fourth City Demonstration Garden was designed by Form Garden Design as a multisensory refuge from the fast pace of city life. This garden, titled Senses and Stillness seeks to engage all 5 senses for those visiting and offers a space full of discoveries. Walk down the curving pathway and find a serene bench where you can enjoy the scent of blooming lavender, the gentle sound of a fountain, and dappled sunlight peeking through the leaves of the green hawthorn (Crataegus viridis) and chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) trees overhead. The fountain you see in this garden is actually a repurposed piece of the old Cylburn estate. As you sit, keep your eyes and ears open– you might be surprised to see wildlife come in and enjoy the quiet space alongside you.

Follow along as we continue to explore all five gardens and visit them at Cylburn to gather ideas for your own green space!
