The Vollmer Visitor Center

Hours: Occasional days during spring
Public access may be impacted by private events.

The Vollmer Visitor Center was built utilizing many green building techniques. It features modern solutions to reduce the building’s impact on the environment like composting toilets, a “living” green roof, and geothermal heating and cooling. The composting toilets, which are completely waterless, were the first of their kind in Baltimore City eliminating the need to hook into the sewer system and saving up to 500,000 gallons of freshwater per year. The upper level serves as a visitor orientation space with restrooms. The auditorium, which seats 200 for lectures, has a glass wall overlooking the woodlands and state-of-the-art sound and projection equipment. In addition to being ideal for workshops and meetings, it is available for wedding receptions and other celebrations.

Have you noticed pollen covering everything lately Have you noticed pollen covering everything lately?

Oak trees may be to blame! Oak catkins are dangling male flowers that produce large amounts of wind-borne pollen. They release the pollen to fertilize female flowers on neighboring trees, or sometimes on the same tree, which may cause some sneezing in the meantime!

These catkins are on a Chinkapin oak, Quercus muehlenbergii, along the entry road at Cylburn Arboretum.
