Monthly Programs

Each month, Cylburn Arboretum Friends offers a variety of programs. Each is offered at a free or reduced cost to Cylburn Arboretum Friends members. All programs are suspended during summer camp season from June through August. Please see the description of each program for more information:

Adult Classes

Tree Collection Walks

Did you know that Cylburn Arboretum is home to many “collections” of trees? Curated woody plant collections are at the heart of every arboretum. Join us the first Wednesday of each month for a one-hour guided walk exploring a different group of trees. Along the way, you will learn about key features while discovering the history and ecology of our trees. Walks meet at the Vollmer Center at 12 noon and last approximately one hour. Free for CAF members, $5 for non-members.

Tree Collection Walk programs will begin in September

Wednesday Walks

These walks are geared toward an adult audience. Topics range broadly and each walk is led by a different expert. Wednesday walks are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month. Wednesday walks meet at the Vollmer Center at 12 noon and last approximately one hour, unless otherwise noted. Free for CAF members, $5 for non-members.

Wednesday Walk programs will resume in September

Gardener’s Workshop

These adult workshops are taught by our horticulture team and are an opportunity to learn more about gardening concepts and skills. Classes meet in the Nature Education Center (NEC) classroom and typically include both a classroom and Cylburn grounds component. Gardener’s Workshops are offered on the second Thursday of each month from 2pm-3:30pm. Cost of each workshop will be determined by topic and materials but CAF members will receive discounted admission.

Gardener’s Workshop programs will resume in September

Garden Drop-ins

Drop by the gardens surrounding the Cylburn mansion on Sundays between 2:30-4:30pm to talk with Cylburn Arboretum Friends’ Garden Educator. See what we’re working on, ask your gardening questions, and pick up tips on how we care for our plants. No fee, no registration required, all ages welcome.

Garden Drop-ins will take a break in August and resume in September.

Youth & Families

Nature Education Center Drop-in Activities

Join us on Saturdays at 11 am for scheduled nature-themed drop-in activities! No fee, no registration required, all ages welcome.

Tree Time

Tree Time is a parent/child nature class offered on the second Tuesday and third Thursday of the month from 10:30-11:30 am. Participants learn about nature through stories, crafts, and exploration. Classes meet on the Nature Education Center porch. Ages 2-5, free for CAF members, $5 for non-members.

Tree Time programs will resume in September

Fall bird migration is upon us, with peak movement Fall bird migration is upon us, with peak movement happening in September and October. Help migrating birds by turning off nonessential lights at night, since most birds make their journeys in the dark, and by installing bird-safe glass or retrofitting existing windows with bird-safe features.

We have examples of both types of bird-safe windows at the Nature Education Center. The windows with frits are made with bird-safe glass, while the doors with bird decals demonstrate how existing glass can be retrofitted. The decals were added after installation to help birds recognize the glass as a barrier and avoid collisions.
