Wild Ginger! Asarum canadense is a native, shade l Wild Ginger! Asarum canadense is a native, shade loving perennial. You’ve probably seen this plant from above and not thought much about it, which is a shame cause you should stop and smell every flower…. Even the small, hidden ones that replicate the smell of dead meat! Asarum canadense largely relies on self pollination, but it also creates small, low to the ground “carrion flowers” that hide under its leaves and replicates the smell and look of rotten means to attract gnats and beetles for pollination! While it can be dangerous to consume too much wild ginger it can be steeped in teas, without extracting all the negative toxins. I love learning all I can about strange and different kinds of native flowers and as a self proclaimed “wild” ginger myself, Asarum canadense is one of my favorites.
