The white-breasted nuthatch is a curious creature. The white-breasted nuthatch is a curious creature. Often seen upside down, this species is known for their ability to walk up and also down trees, although they are not a member of the Woodpecker family. The white-breated nuthatch is native to Maryland, living in forest tree cavities, and consuming a diet of mainly insects. Their specialized legs and toes help them grip the bark as they go down trees. As the only known bird species to be able to descend trees headfirst, ornithologists suggest this could provide an advantage in seeing seeds and fruits that other birds would miss by only going up the tree.
