This time of year, wineberry stems, or canes, are This time of year, wineberry stems, or canes, are easy to spot because of their bright red color and dense hairs. This non native shrub was introduced to the United States in the 1890s by berry growers who wanted to use it as breeding stock with native raspberries, a practice that continues today. The berries appear in summer and turn a vivid red when ripe, which helps distinguish wineberry from native blackberries and black raspberries.

Wineberries spread when cane tips touch the ground and re root, and they are also widely dispersed through animal droppings after animals eat the berries. Once established, wineberry can form prickly thickets, and its vigorous growth can crowd out native plant species. Wineberry can be found throughout Cylburn’s woodland edge and woodland, including the areas shown in these photos from the Moudry Woods next to the Nature Education Center.
