If you are a regular Cylburn hiker, you may have n If you are a regular Cylburn hiker, you may have noticed flags along the trails or invasive plants cut and sprayed in bright colors.

These are a part of the BCRP Forestry Division Natural Areas Unit’s (NAU) investments into the Cylburn forest. The NAU oversees the management of over 2,000 forested acres in Baltimore City parks and has developed forest management plans for several locations including Cylburn’s woodland. The NAU has contracted Environmental Quality Resources (EQR) to treat an array of invasive plants including wineberry (pictured), black jetbead, multiflora rose, and Japanese barberry (also pictured) that can displace native vegetation and threaten the health of our forest.

EQR places flags at the boundary of the treatment area so that it is clear to our hikers! And herbicides contain a maker dye to show where it has been applied. Though the herbicides are considered safe to people/pets once dry, visitors will likely want to avoid direct contact to be extra safe.
