When we think of flowers, we often picture blooms When we think of flowers, we often picture blooms in garden beds or open fields. But look up this spring, and you’ll find that many trees are flowering too. The cherry collection adjacent to the formal garden at Cylburn is currently in full bloom.

Most trees produce flowers, though they can be easy to miss. A few exceptions include conifers, like pines and cedars, which reproduce with cones, and the ancient ginkgo, whose flowers are small and not showy.

Maples, magnolias, and cherries all bloom in early spring, often before their leaves emerge, turning the canopy into a display of color.

So the next time you’re out at Cylburn, don’t forget to look up. You might discover that the trees are in bloom all around you.
