A Bit of a Public Service Announcement: Can you sp A Bit of a Public Service Announcement: Can you spot the ticks in this photo?

We’ve been finding ticks here at Cylburn this spring—especially in brushy areas like the one pictured. Maryland is home to six species of ticks, and most can carry diseases that affect both humans and pets. You’ve probably heard of Lyme disease, but Baltimore is now also seeing cases of Babesiosis.

Some tips from the UMD Extension on how to protect yourself from ticks:
- Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes. Tuck pants into your socks and shirts into your pants.
- Choose clothing and shoes treated with permethrin—a tick repellent that kills ticks on contact.
- Avoid sitting on logs, stumps, or directly on the ground in brushy areas.
- Check your clothing and body regularly while outdoors. A lint roller can help remove ticks from clothes before they attach.
- Use insect repellent (such as DEET) according to the label. Apply sunscreen first, then repellent. Never apply DEET under clothing or on pets.
- Shower as soon as possible after coming indoors.
- Before washing, toss clothes in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may be hiding in the fabric.

UMD Extension has lots of other great resources on identifying different types of ticks and also preventing them around your home and garden.
