The Gardens

Many beautiful gardens ornament the grounds at Cylburn, most are located near and around the Mansion.

Cylburn has a wide variety of beautifully planted flower gardens displaying shrubs, perennials and annuals. From the “named” gardens that honor those who have played important roles in Cylburn’s history to the colorful plantings that enhance the mansion and points around the grounds, each garden offers a collection of colors and textures that delight visitors throughout the year.

Hi, my name is Natalie Tompkins, and I’m an inte Hi, my name is Natalie Tompkins, and I’m an intern at Cylburn Arboretum Friends through Friends School of Baltimore. On my second-to-last day, I took a walk through Cylburn’s woodlands and gardens—and listened to the birds that call this place home.

On the wooded trails, surrounded by tall trees like the ones in the photo, you’re almost guaranteed to hear the call of a Red-eyed Vireo. I also heard a Carolina Wren, American Robin, and a Wood Thrush while I was walking through the woods.

As for the more open areas, the options are practically endless. By the Circle Garden, the NEC, and everywhere in between you can hear Blue Jays and Bluebirds, Goldfinches, Cardinals, Blackbirds, and all sorts of sparrows. In the more open areas—like the Mansion Circle Garden and spaces around the Nature Education Center—you can hear Blue Jays, Eastern Bluebirds, Goldfinches, Cardinals, Red-winged Blackbirds, and all kinds of sparrows.

Of all the bird calls I know, I am partial to the Tufted Titmouse and Song Sparrow—both of which can be heard at Cylburn Arboretum! Next time you visit, take a moment to stop and listen. The soundtrack of Cylburn is one of its best-kept treasures.
