In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighti

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting Black horticulturists and environmentalists whose work continues to inspire and impact us today.

In 1984, the Naomi Camper Memorial Garden was established at Cylburn Arboretum in memory of Naomi Camper, the first elected president of the For-Win-Ash Garden Club (representing Forest Park, Windsor Hills, and Ashburton). The club made history in 1970 as the first African American garden club admitted into the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland. A civic trailblazer and social activist, Naomi Camper was also a former member of the Cylburn Administrative Board.

Naomi’s legacy lives on at Cylburn Arboretum. In partnership with @recnparks , we are working with volunteer designers and local organizations to revitalize five residential-scale gardens, including the Naomi Camper Memorial Garden. For-Win-Ash Garden Club members have been paired with designers from @groundsmithcollective , a group dedicated to socially and environmentally responsible landscape design. We are excited to see the Camper Garden continue to inspire a new generation of gardeners once the restoration is complete.
