A key function of a healthy woodland edge is provi A key function of a healthy woodland edge is providing habitat for wildlife, with layers of vegetation offering shelter from the ground up.

Pressure from invasive plant species and unmanaged deer population have led to the decline of this woodland edge’s forest layers. The following plant is to be planted this fall within the ‘Food Edge’, to supplement the existing plant composition:

Canopy Layer:
- Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata)
- Red hickory (Carya ovalis)
- Red oak (Quercus rubra)
- Butternut (Juglans cinerea)

Understory Layer:
- Res mulberry (Morus rubra)
- Downy serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea)
- Allegheny serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)
- Allegheny plum (Prunus alleghaniensis)

Shrub Layer:
- Allegheny blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis)
- Nantucket serviceberry (Amelanchier nantucketensis)
- Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis)
- Purple flowering raspberry (Rubus odoratus)
- Running serviceberry (Amelanchier stolonifera)
- Black huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata)
- High-bush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)
- Red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia)

The listed plant materials have edible and medicinal properties. This is a friendly reminder that foraging on the property is prohibited—though this is the case, we invite you to observe the plantings just behind the Formal Garden and use the list above to guide your own food gardens at home!

Forest management and healthy forests contribute to healthy waterways through reducing runoff and improving water quality. Through forest management and restoration at Cylburn Arboretum, we are improving the water quality of the Jones Falls watershed before it reaches the Patapsco River. This work is funded in part through the Chesapeake Bay Trust and Maryland Department of the Environment.
