VSV Training

February 25, 2026 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
  • « General Volunteer Orientation
  • Cylburn Spring Break Nature Camp 2026 »
Visitor Services Volunteer (VSV) Training for Cylburn Arboretum Nature Education Center and Vollmer Visitor Center.

As a Visitor Services Volunteer (VSV), you will be trained to greet and engage visitors, ensuring a rewarding experience for all guests. The ideal candidate will work at least once shift per month. To volunteer, you do not need to be an expert, though we welcome VSV’s with a variety of interests and talents to share!

Typical duties include welcoming guests, restocking handouts, answering questions, and keeping the space tidy. Besides simply feeling great about supporting Cylburn, benefits for regular volunteers include an annual volunteer appreciation event, free membership to Cylburn Arboretum Friends (CAF), and camaraderie with other volunteers. After you have been trained, you will have the opportunity to sign up on an online calendar for the shifts that work well for your schedule!

Stump puffballs (Lycoperdon pyriforme) grow on dec Stump puffballs (Lycoperdon pyriforme) grow on decaying tree stumps in large clusters. They start off looking like regular mushrooms (see photo from the very same log as the video) but throughout the fall and winter, they mature and their exterior “skin” turns brittle and papery. They develop a hole on top, and the “dust” you see in the video is millions of spores! In addition to a human finger, rain or animals can also help to release the spores.
