More organisms live below ground than above it, so let’s dig deep to see what lives just underneath our feet”

Join Master Naturalist Pat Jonas in the Nature Education Center to learn more about the many animals that live just underneath our feet. More organisms live below ground than above it, ranging from microscopic bacteria, fungi, tiny insects and earthworms to larger amphibians, reptiles and burrowing animals who use underground burrows for shelter, hibernation, and raising young. They not only interact with each other but with various plants and animals and play a crucial role in the functioning of all healthy ecosystems.

Check out this amazing before and after! Lucy and Check out this amazing before and after! Lucy and Maura, our Maryland Climate Corps members, have been hard at work in the Viburnum collection, located behind the Cylburn gazebo. Pictured here is a rouge viburnum they’ve eliminated to keep the walkways open and restore adequate space for nearby plants. The weed wrench makes our lives so much easier. Make sure you come check out their work in progress!
