Pop-up Presentation: Feathers
September 7 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Join us in the Nature Education Center to learn about bird feathers with Master Naturalist Pat Jonas!
Fall migration is underway for birds, with many of them traveling through our area. Feathers are unique to birds and make them some of the most successful animals on Earth. Most birds use them for flight, but they have many other uses, including temperature regulation, weather protection, camouflage, communication, attracting mates and pollination. We’ll look at the structure of birds’ feathers, how feathers are formed, how feathers are colored, and how birds replace and care for their feathers. We’ll also learn why it is important to help protect bird populations and their habitats for the benefit of future generations.
While you’re in the Nature Education Center be sure to check out the drop-in activity in the classroom and look at feathers under the microscope. Click here for more information.
