This past week, Garden Educator Ron Roberto worked This past week, Garden Educator Ron Roberto worked with our current highschool interns Ella, Nathan and Natalie to install a nurse crop into the meadow behind our Nature Education Center. Nurse crops, also referred to as cover crops, are annual plant species used to provide quick coverage of newly installed sites - often bare in their early stages - to reduce weed pressure and soil erosion. This is especially important for this newly installed meadow as the longer-lived perennial and grass species, which take 2-3 years, establish.

The nurse crop used is a species of annual grass many of you all may be familiar with - Avena sativa, commonly known as oats! This species is one of the major cereal grains produced around the world. Avina sativa will come up quickly, germinating within 7-14 days in cool moist conditions. Luckily for us, the weather this week has delivered the ideal growing conditions for this species!

Steps taken:
1. Broadcast seeds by hand. 1lbs of seeds was spread in this area of approximately 1028sq. ft.
2. Light layer of straw is applied to (hopefully) deter bird and small mammal feeding, while allowing light to infiltrate through to the seedlings.
3. A plastic mesh is layed on top to prevent the straw from blowing away. This will be rerolled and reused to protect new woody plant installations from deer browse and rub.
4. Lasty, water!

This area was directly seeded this past January, giving time for natural stratification to take place - a process many of the selected meadow species required to break dormancy and germinate.

More related updates to come as Ron continue his woodland edge restoration here at Cylburn. @chesconscorps @chesapeakebaytrust
