The mansion was built by Jesse Tyson, a chromium magnate. It was designed by George A. Frederick (who also designed Baltimore City Hall) in 1863. The Cylburn mansion is constructed of Gneiss stone from the Tyson mines at Bare Hills. The mansion alludes to various European architectures styles. The mansard roof (a roof which has four sloping sides each of which becomes steeper halfway down) are French. The wood trim is Victorian. The lines and tower are like an Italianate villa. But the front porch, unlike much of the rest of the house, is distinctly American. The mansion currently houses the offices of the BCRP Horticultural Division. The first floor and porch are used for meetings and rented for special events.
