‘Where Baltimore Grows’ Speaker Series
November 15 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
In this talk we’ll look at the field marks for how to read a forested landscape and then focus in on the intense land use and hidden history of Cyburn’s forest. Surrounding the mansion and gardens at Cylburn Arboretum are 128 acres of forest with a hidden history. Mixed together in this small space are ancient oaks pre-dating Maryland statehood, old forest fires, 1800s logging, and a farm called Springwood. Most of what is now Cylburn’s forest was open farmland during the 1800s; it naturally rewilded during the 1900s after the farm was abandoned today with a mix of species and ages that reflect its variable past.
