Celebration of Art
Entering its 3rd year, Cylburn’s Celebration of Art features regional artists in a gallery show and reception in the beautiful Vollmer Center. Paintings, drawings, collages, indoor and outdoor sculpture, and photographs will all be a part of this dynamic show. A weekend of art activities and programs accompany the gallery show. Free programs and free access to this wonderful exhibition connect the community to art programming at Cylburn.
Saturday June 14
Preview “Southern” Brunch, Lecture and Sale:
“Art in the Interior: How Color and Design Affect Us and Our Personal Environments”12 pm to 2pm Vollmer Center
Louis Shields, artist, interior designer, restorer, and owner of Hastening Antiques in Middleberg, Virginia will speak on “Art in the Interior”: how color and design elements affect us and our personal environments. Using illustrations from antiquity to modern times, we will explore the importance and the universal appeal of color, shape, and structural balance. A fabulous Southern champagne brunch prepared by The Classic Catering People will be served, and attendees will get a sneak peek of (and first dibs on!) the artwork for sale at the Celebration of Art at Cylburn Arboretum. The Celebration of Art will feature the works of over 30 regional artists, including works by Mr. Shields.
The Walters Art Museum Presents: A Nature Art Activity for ChildrenMansion Porch 11am-2pm
Join us for a fun nature art project with staff from The Walters Art Museum. They’ll have all of the supplies you need to create your own masterpiece to bring home with you. In the past, projects have included nature crowns and salamander hotels; we’ll have to wait and see what fun surprises are coming this year!
Gallery Reception and SaleVollmer Center 5 pm to 8pm
Join Honorary Co-Chairs Gary and Elana Vikan to view (and hopefully purchase!) works by regional artists at the 3rd Celebration of Art event at Cylburn Arboretum. Paintings, drawings, collages, indoor and outdoor sculpture, and photographs will all be a part of this dynamic show. A special presentation of works by the students of the Baltimore School for the Arts has also been added this year. Listen to smooth jazz as waiters pass delicious hors d’oeuvres created by the Classic Catering People, and sip a hand-crafted beer by Union Craft Brewing, or a glass of prosecco or wine as you decide which of the many pieces will fit perfectly in your home. Proceeds from Ticket sales and a portion of the art sales benefit the Cylburn Arboretum Association.

Lecture by Gary Vikan: Beauty and the BrainVollmer Center 2 pm
In this richly-illustrated lecture, Dr. Gary Vikan, retired director of the
Walters Art Museum, will explore the impact of recent developments in brain science on possible solutions to such old and puzzling questions as: Why are experts fooled by fakes? Is there something called “significant form” -forms in art that we all will acknowledge as beautiful? How is an artist’s creativity affected by brain damage? Ponder these questions while in the presence of nearly 100 works created by regional artists during the public open day of the Celebration of Art Show and Sale.
